A bit of history of Dolores County, Colorado

In 1931, Logan Pearsall Smith wrote the following
"The indefatigable pursuit of an unattainable perfection, even though it consists in nothing more than in the pounding of an old piano, is what alone gives meaning to our life on this unavailing star.
Somehow this old piano was left behind to melt in the elements, perhaps a victim of changing times. In its youth there were few radios and phonographs. If homesteaders wanted music, they had to provide it themselves.
When old-timers remember happy times in their youth, they often recall country dances with a piano in the corner accompanied often with a fiddle. They danced all night and the on Sunday listened to the strains of "Rock of Ages" played on the same piano. Now its workings are bare, its secrets exposed; another piece of history that will soon be gone.
